Hello and Welcome to Our Blog!

The purpose of this blog is to document and share our process as we go through our Senior Design Capstone Project at the University of South Alabama. This blog is geared towards local middle and high schools that participate in Jubliee BEST Robotics, but anyone is welcome to comment/post with any questions! Below you will find a brief description of what our senior project consists of, and we look forward to sharing this journey with all of you.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Introduction

Beginning during the Fall Semester of 2018, a group of 5 students were chosen to be a part of the Urban Air Taxi Senior Design Team. The idea for this project stems from the increased need for urban aircraft transportation to integrate into the national airspace. This is a large Urban Traffic Control problem, however the main idea for this project is to address safety when it comes to Urban Aircraft Mobility. This will be accomplished through the design and implementation of a fault tolerant control system, that will be tested on a large scale prototype to account for the flight dynamics for the actual aircraft. Future teams will look at incorporating additional safety features into the aircraft design. This design will also address a sociological aspect by increasing the appeal to the human population, as well as decreasing the scare factor. The American society will not adapt to this new form of transportation, until it is clear that safety is the main focus with all designs.

Project Goals

§ Design and build a large scale prototype modeled after our “vision” of an Urban Air Taxi
§ Incorporate redundancy and reconfigurable control within our control system
§ Simulate fault tolerant control system to prove feasibility
§ Test fault tolerant control system on large scale prototype

Outreach

We hope to participate in the 2019 AIAA Student Conference, and 2019 AIAA Aviation Professional Conference. We will also be sharing our Senior Capstone Design process through social media and a blog with all of the local schools that participate in BEST Robotics. At the end of our spring semester (April 2019) we will be hosting an event for the local BEST Robotics schools to inspire them to apply what they are learning in their local competition to pursue a career in STEM, and to get them excited about opening doors they never thought were possible before.

Budget/Sponsor Benefits

A very big part of making this project possible is donations from Sponsors; we need help to make this project happen. All contributions will be used in purchasing all the materials for manufacturing the prototype, participating in the AIAA Student/Professional Conference, purchasing materials needed for our presentation at the Design Symposium, as well as a presentation to local schools that are involved in BEST Robotics. The documents in this packet outline our budget for making this project come to life, as well as the benefits you will receive if you choose to sponsor our team.

We appreciate you taking the time to read this, and if you are interested in being a sponsor, or have any other questions, please contact Allie Harville.
